A Look Back
The Braves began the sim by impressively beating the Twins 5-1, then unfortunately dropping a close one to the Twins as Rookie closer Watty Clarke showed his first batch of nerves allowing the Twins to score enough runs to take the series finale. From there, the Braves welcomed the Boston Red Sox. After an impressive 8-5 victory in the series opener, the next two games in the series were heartbreakers. The Braves lost Game 2 1-3, they then closed out the series with a tough 4-5 loss. After ejecting the Red Sox team from Atlanta for being such impertinent guests, they welcomed the Detroit Tigers to town for a three game series. While it was a hard fought series for the most part, the Tiggers swept the not so mighty Braves and even came close to a no hit shutout in game 1 with the Detroit pitcher throwing a 3 hit shutout. Game 2 resulted in a close 3-4 affair, with the Braves falling just short once more in what is becoming the script of their season to this point. After being emotionally drained from the first two games of the series, the Braves didn't have much left as they went out with a whimper in game 3, 4-8. This sim also probably marked the end of Leo Fisher's career with the Atlanta Braves. With his contract running out, Braves management tried to give him one last chance by refusing to send him to the minors in the Great Purge of Pstinking Pitchers of last week, but Fisher pushed his ERA even higher, and blew another game. So hasta la vista baby, and enjoy the minor league bus rides.

A Look Ahead

The Braves look to snap a 5 game losing streak, and there is good news and bad news. The bad news is their opponents include a three game series with the White Sox (a contender in the AL Central) at Turner Field, then they head on the road for the return match at the Boston Red Sox. Sandwiched between these two tough series is one of the most important series of the year for the Braves as they head to the Big Apple to take on the division leading Mets in a 4 game series which will probably determine if the Braves have any chance whatsoever to make this a good season. There is good news however, as Dewey Sheridan and Mark Schulte return to the rotation after being on the disabled list for all of June. With the return of two of their most consistent middle relievers, the Braves bullpen coaches will have a much wider (and safer) selection to bridge the gap between very good closer and decent starters. Another bright point is the return of injured rookie outfielder Johnny Sullivan. Playing sparingly at the start of the year, Sullivan had been scheduled to take over the starting Left Field position in order to allow Bernie Smith to shift to Right Field to replace John Ross who moved to First Baseman. The range and defensive glove on Sullivan now gives the Braves an outfield that can easily cover the lines and gaps, while also giving an excellent #2 batter a chance to knock in some runs. Well, that's all for this sim, and remember.....Goooooo Braves.
